Short of the Week: Blind Spot by Matthew Nayman

  1. I really liked how the commotion in the background was out of focus - just like his day. This film not only has an interesting plot twist, it also makes the viewer remember that life is too precious to get so angry about the small things. I liked how the camera stayed focused on his face the whole time, it really helped show how extreme his emotions were. The lighting is pretty basic I believe so the meteoroid (what ever it was) can have a bigger impact since it's out of focus.

  2. Love the name of this short, the blind spot, referring to the blind spot you don't see while driving when really the car is so close to you. Like in this short all the drama and destruction was so close to him but he was so busy focusing on something he had no time to see it. I really liked that they stayed focused on his face with all the problems in the background out of focus. I didn't even see what was happening in the background because I was so focused on this guys stresses with working with the airport company. Once you realize everything going on in the background it has a huge impact on the short.

  3. I really enjoyed this short. I liked how the main character was the only thing in the frame that was in focus the entire time because, to me, it was a great example of how self centered everyone is in today's world. He thinks he is having a terrible day, yet he is completely unaware to what is going on behind him, outside of his car. A plane crashes into a building outside of his car window and he doesn't even so much as turn his head to see what is going on outside of his car. I think the best part of this short is the (somewhat) subtle message that we are all so wrapped up in work and technology and just moving so fast that we get caught up in ourselves and don't really ever pay attention to anyone or anything else. The Blind Spot did a fantastic job of showing how insignificant our personal problems can be when we take a step back and look at the bigger problems happening all around us each and every day. Great short, I really really liked it!

  4. That was a very cool idea for a short film. I really liked gradually becoming aware of what's going on behind him cause. We're so focused on him and HIS problems, it takes awhile to even notice anything happening behind him. Very cool.

  5. I really thought it was a really creative idea, and had a strange twist on american history. And shows the different perspective on people in history who are often over looked. I also really enjoyed the voice-over but i did not like how they cut from different costuming from different time eras with different actors/actress'.

  6. This short really surprised me how it was one complete shot with the character in his car. I really love the look and tone of the short with the lens flares and almost glossy visual image of the film. I loved the dialogue and how the character responded to what saw as in the beginning he is caught off guard in the middle of his daily routine. I thought the special effects were done very well and timed effectively.
