I thought that this short was visually stunning with a strong narrative to match. Personally I did not like the last line about the bag wishing to be made to die but outside of that I really enjoyed the story of its journey. I loved how the bag not only took on feelings and emotions but in searching for an identity gained one. I thought that it was a great touch to see a wide range of visuals from common place urban and suburban locations to the depths of the ocean. Each shot was visually interesting and seeing the bag drift in the wind made me sympathize with it because the bag felt helplessly thrown through its journey.
That was perhaps the most powerful line of the whole film, equating bags to mankind, while additionally urging us to recycle. What didn't you like about it?
I really enjoyed this short! I felt it was a creative perspective of someones "Life". Also really enjoyed the colors and different angle shots. I felt they did a good job showing the emotion and depth of the bags character. They did such by the voice over but different situations the bag went through and how he felt about them. Over all very creative and unique!
Having met Ramin Bahrani at the Telluride Film Festival, it's easy to understand that he is a strong activist, striving for equal rights and environmental protection. This film is obviously a jab at the litterers of this world, but it's more than that. It adds life to this plastic bag, while documenting it's travel around the west coast. It may fall short in some areas, but the meaning of the message and the beautiful shots and having the legendary Werner Herzog provide the voice of our protagonist made up for it. How long do you think they stood around waiting for a gust of wind to come to blow a bag in a certain direction? Bonus points for that.
Really neat piece this week. I know a plastic bag blowing in the wind has grown to be a serious cliché in the film industry but it's pulled off rather well here. I found myself invested in this plastic bag. The voice of Werner Herzog really took this piece to the next level. Kudos to whoever got him. Other than that, this piece had some strong direction. You could sense the confidence the director has in his own style with the angles and camera movements he chose.
Really cool idea to follow the life of a grocery bag. Although the voice sounded incredibly passive about everything and I found that odd. My favorite part was the brief romance with the other plastic bag. I really appreciate how tough it would be to use a plastic bag as your main actor and have to deal with waiting for the right wind to move the bag how they wanted it. I'm sure you'd have to be super patient. Overall, I thought the whole recycling message was a little in your face (especially with that final line) and I didn't really like the narration (except when he was talking about the various animals as "monsters" - I DID find that funny) BUT on the plus side, all of the shots looked pretty great and it was just a really cool and original idea. So, not bad.
Other than the cute story.. I really didn't enjoy this film. It was super bland. I do admire how original it is. I"m sure creating this film wasn't easy.. Werner Herzog's voice was the only thing that kept me invested in this piece.
