Short of the Week: The Camera by Peter Lewis

  1. Allen Miller: First off, this short immediately reminded me of the horror film "Shutter" - which was about this ghost who kept showing up in a photographer's photos. It might be because I immediately associated this with a horror film but I found it kind of insane that the girl wasn't freaking out that guy kept showing up in her pictures. My initial reaction was that he was a ghost and she just seemed completely cool with that. She smiled and tried to find him, like hide-and-seek or something. Even if she previously knew the guy, that would still warrant a little bit more of a reaction, I would think. I liked the ending and how it kinda made me rethink the camera - now I'm thinking the camera traps people in it? Which, honestly, sounds even more horror than a camera that can see ghosts. If she had been acting differently, it would have felt like a very "Twilight Zone" ending for her to take the picture of herself and become trapped in the camera. Except, she was happy about it? Which was so strange to me. I really hope I'm not the only one who feels like this short is secretly horror and just hiding behind the fact that it has the lighting. music, and acting of a more lighthearted story.

  2. I really enjoyed this short! The natural lighting and feel was comforting to the eye and I felt as relaxed as her on the beach. I liked the different angles, and am always a fan of close ups on the feet or hands as they're doing something, I feel it just gives you a different perspective. Also the sound along with it, the piano but also the very natural sounds gave the movie a laid back feel. Look at Allen's comment above, I never thought of the movie as a scary horror movie with the girl getting trapped in the camera in the end, but after reading your comment I can see how it could have this dark twist to what while watching I felt was a happy reminiscing story. I think people can take it both ways. Overall I really enjoying this short and the story

  3. By far my favorite short. It was so natural feeling. The scenery, background noises, music, and lighting were all so perfect. I truly loved the plot because it could be interpreted so differently by everyone who watches it. Which I imagine is such a hard thing to accomplish as a film maker. I'd like to think that in the end the girl finally gets what she wants, which is to be with the man. I also truly loved showing so many different angles on her movement. Made it feel so realistic.

  4. I don't know what it was about this short, but I was really conscious of the use of the rule of thirds. It seemed like almost every shot utilized this technique really well. I also really enjoyed the music. The simple piano piece fit very well and really enhanced the feeling of desperation when she can't find the boy. As for the story of this piece, I was a little skeptical at first and thought it was a bit cheesy but right around the point the boy was lost I really began to enjoy it. I couldn't stop playing out all the different ways the story was going to go in my head. Overall a great short with some wonderful music, story elements and some technically efficient camera work.

  5. I felt that this short was put together quite nicely. I liked the use of the different angles and shots to show what the character is doing. The story and the composition of the shots were very easy to understand and follow. Personally my favorite part was the shot of her walking up the dune in the beginning.

  6. Visually this is one of my favorite shorts because I felt like with each image came a great deal of tone and emotion. I thought that the home gave a very haunting feel and the fact that the girl is alone for most of it without seeing her brother through the pictures makes you feel her isolation and loneliness. I thought the visual narrative was fanciful once she sees him in the image and at the end I felt that it was very heartwarming to see how she remembers him.
