I really enjoyed this music video. It was like modern day West Side story except with a bigger plot twist. However I didn't really like how the camera movement wasn't smooth. It felt very choppy and distracted me from what was going on. I think the use of colors really help show the divide in the two groups, the night crawlers wore darks and punk makeup, while the day people wore bright colors and funky denim. Great costuming.
I think this is a new creative way to make music videos, but I feel the point of music videos is to hear the song but when it comes down to it I was so distracted by the story line I didn't really listen to much of the song. But that being said I really enjoyed this story line. I like how Drew Barrymore but a Romeo Juliet modern day twist on it with as well as a West Side Story feel with the dancing during the fight and the two gangs. The costumes worked well with telling the story and having them be two different shades for two different times of night. I really liked the high shots of everything as well. Overall really good!
The first thing that stood out to me here was definitely the all-star cast. Donald Glover is especially a favorite of mine for his role in "Community", his stand-up career, his writing for "30 Rock" and his musical alter ego "Childish Gambino". In addition to Glover, having stars like Chloe Moretz and Miranda Cosgrove really help take this music video to another level. I enjoyed the use of handwritten messages in this piece. The whole bit with their hands and the writing on the wall was really powerful. My only critiques are that I wish they would've kept dialogue completely out of it and perhaps made the fight scene a little less dance-centric with the choreography. Other than that this was an excellent take on a music video with some excellent talent and clever filming techniques.
I liked this short a lot. There was a nice array of bright colors and great variety of camera angles. The story was kind of hard to follow I thought because there was just a lot of cutting from character to character dancing. My favorite scene would probably have to be the scene where the guy fell off the building because it looked very realistic.
That was such a cool music video! I can't believe I had never seen it before! Chloë Grace Moretz is literally my favorite actress and I thought I had seen everything she had done. The fact that Donald Glover was in it also (even in a smaller role) was also awesome cause he is SO cool. Actually, most of the actors/actresses were people I really liked so the casting really added a lot to this. Music videos can really make fantastic short films when done well (like this one). The music really helped to set the tone and mood of the video and overall, that was so well done. I had never seen anything done by Drew Berrymore before. She had a much darker style than I would've anticipated for her. The color scheme alone took me by surprise when associated it with her.
I really enjoyed this music video.
